Downsizing for Happiness

Downsizing is something that everybody should consider from time to time – regardless of age or income, with a single purpose in mind – happiness. A calmer, happier and more fulfilling life.

I decided to downsize in my 50s and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. There were many reasons for my decision, but these were the major ones:

  • I wasn’t using all the rooms in the house regularly – some doors stayed closed for weeks.
  • Maintaining the home and gardens was becoming difficult and expensive due to my working hours.
  • Gardening is my hobby, but I struggled to find time to mow the lawns and weed the garden regularly, which caused stress and anxiety every time I looked out the window.
  • I felt the need to declutter and simplify my life
  • I could save on mortgage payments, utility bills, maintenance, etc.

We’re all on different journeys, so the only advice I can give is to explore your options regularly; change isn’t always a bad thing, and pursuing your happiness should be priority number 1.

A few valid reasons why downsizing to a smaller home should be considered:

1. Smaller homes are easier to maintain, saving time, effort, and money.

2. You’ll spend less time decluttering – and worrying about decluttering.

3. Smaller homes are more affordable, have less risk, and lower utility bills.

4. Owning a smaller house can be mentally freeing. The more we own, the more we worry about what we own. Collect less stuff and enjoy more moments.

5. Smaller homes have a smaller environmental impact.

6. You’ll have more time to pursue the things you love and spend more time with family and friends.

7. Contrary to popular belief, smaller homes can encourage social connections among family members in the home and also promote more outdoor and social activities.

8. Downsizing forces you to remove mental and physical baggage.

9. Smaller homes discourage the accumulation of unnecessary items that clutter your home.

10. You’ll have less space to decorate, allowing you to upgrade your home with better-quality items that suit your needs and bring you joy.

11. Smaller, more affordable homes are easier and quicker to sell than larger, expensive homes.

12. Renting out a smaller home is easier and less risky in the short or long term.

13. You get a fresh start. While letting go of possessions and the memories made in your home can be hard at first, the process can also be extremely liberating and exciting.

14. You could move to a better location, ensure your home has easier and safer access for later needs, be better suited for your hobbies, interests and family – and ultimately enjoy more lifestyle spontaneity in the space you need.
